On Wednesday, February 4th, 2026, members of the Pennsylvania state senate passed legislation for a new bill that will ban students from having their cell phones out during their classes.
What this will mean for schools across Pennsylvania, and other states if they have this legislation passed, is that schools will be required to implement a bell-to-bell policy that prohibits students from having their phones on school grounds and forces them to leave them at home.
Some schools, like BASH, have already had this policy put into place in previous years.
This change was made with the hope that if students don’t have their cell phones, they won’t be distracted in class, leading to better grades and test results. Some have doubted the validity of these claims, stating that if you get rid of one distraction, students will just find another one. Whether either of these claims are true is undetermined, but the latter does seem likely.
While many students are vocally against this change, a majority of teachers and parents are happy to see this change implemented. The main concern for parents is how their kids will contact them in case of an emergency if they’re unable to have their phones.
Ava Peterson, a sophomore at BASH, had this to say regarding the new phone ban and why she’s against it. “I have to be honest, I don’t really know much about it, but I will say this. For many people, myself included, this would be a major safety issue. I need to use my phone to work out how I am getting home from clubs, and if I weren’t able to bring my phone into school, it’d be nearly impossible to know if I am able to go to the club or not.”
Ava then went on to say, “Students having quick communication with their parents is a very important tool to keep available to students. If every single time a student had to speak to their parents, they had to go to the office, or some other room being monitored to call them, it would be a constant traffic issue within the hallways.”
Ava finished by reiterating that it’s very important to her to be able to contact family should there be an emergency situation.
BASH hopes that all its students will understand the new rule and will be accommodating to it.
