Boyertown has had plenty of time capsules throughout the years that include sentimental and important items from that time period.
1966 time capsule
In 2016, during a block party held by the Boyertown Historical Society on Chestnut Ave, the Mayor of Boyertown dug up the time capsule planted in 1966, made by the Boyertown Casket Company.
After 50 years, the capsule was unearthed. It took 2 hours of digging to get it out of the ground.
When it was dug up, it was rusted shut due to water seeping inside. It took 1 month to get it opened finally. People were disappointed because they wanted to see what was inside. However, when it was opened, the items inside were damaged.
Inside the capsule were documents, money, souvenirs, collector items, and photos. Most of the paper items and photos were sadly destroyed by water damage.
2016 time capsule
In October of 2016, for the 150th Anniversary of Boyertown, the mayor decided to bury another time capsule. The container was designed by the Boyertown Planting Mill. The workers at the Planting Mill got to sign the inside of the container.
The capsule is located in the Boyertown Community Park, and it will be dug up in 2066, repeating this 50-year cycle.
Inside the capsule, there is a cell phone, a 2016 People’s Magazine, a baseball championship trophy, yearbooks, and handwritten letters from people in the community to their future family or themselves.
To prevent water damage like the previous time capsule, this one is being placed in a heavy-duty sealed metal vault. This is to make sure the items don’t become damaged.
In 2066, people in Boyertown will be able to attend the opening of the 2016 time capsule. There will be another parade to continue the tradition from previous decades.
This capsule is a huge sentiment to Boyertown, as it shows history, togetherness, and the love of Boyertown. Community is a huge part of Boyertown, and this time capsule is a pillar of that.
