Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, released on October 3, 2025, sparked a wide range of reactions from critics and listeners alike. While some praised her new direction, others questioned the album’s depth and consistency.
On albumoftheyear.org the overall user rating of The Life of a Showgirl was a 4.3 out of 10, while the overall critic rating was a 6 out of 10. On rateyourmusic.com the overall rating was a 3.38 out of 10.
Anthony Fantano, a popular online music critic from The Needle Drop, believes that The Life of a Showgirl lacks the emotion and storytelling that defined Taylor Swift’s earlier work. He said, “People have been saying this, and I do tend to agree, that there are songs she wrote when she was a teenager or in her early 20s that, compared to many songs on this album, are more mature and poetic. Taylor was writing immensely more mature and smarter tracks that had just a lot more depth to their emotions, to their storytelling, to a lot of things, frankly. Sadly, I feel like this record’s biggest issue is that it truly is just dumbed down, which is why I’m feeling a light to decent 4 on this one.”
Wren Graves from Consequence of Sound reviewed The Life of a Showgirl and gave it a 6.7 out of 10. He said, “The Life of a Showgirl promises vulnerability and occasionally delivers. But Swift can’t quite commit to the bit. She’s too famous, too successful, too Taylor Swift to either disappear into the character or let us hear her own dark thoughts. Too often, it’s only skin deep.” Wren Graves believes that Taylor Swift is too famous to make an album about being vulnerable and struggling through being a “showgirl.”
The students from BASH also have listened to songs The Life of a Showgirl and gave their own thoughts about them.
Carter Kenney, a BASH Senior thought the title track wasn’t very great, “I think the song is fine as an album closer, its just a bare-bones pop song that I have heard 100 times. Sabrina Carpenter doesn’t add much to the song. I wish she would’ve tried something different with it, like she would make something stand out, not just chasing fame and attention.”
Not all BASH students shared the same negative opinions, though. Allison Wilson, a BASH Sophomore, listened to the whole album and liked it. “I really like the new album. It’s very different from her old ones in a good way. It adds variety to her music as a whole. I also like how it shows a new point in her life and how much she’s changed since being engaged and being on tour. The Life of a Showgirl is probably my favorite album by Taylor Swift,” she said.
Whether students loved or disliked The Life of a Showgirl, it’s clear the album sparked plenty of conversation at BASH. Taylor Swift continues to surprise her audience, and even a “light 4” from critics hasn’t stopped fans from streaming it nonstop. Love it or not, her music still gets everyone talking, and that’s what makes her impossible to ignore.
