Jingle Ball a Jolly Good Time
5 Seconds Of Summer, Alessia Cara, Hailee Steinfeld, Conrad Sewell, Shawn Mendes, Natalie LaRose, R. City, Tove Lo, Selena Gomez, Charlie Puth, and Calvin Harris.
All took the stage in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center on December 9th, 2015, for Jingle Ball 2015. Q102’s annual Jingle Ball gets bigger and bigger every year.
This year’s concert was filled with the good and the bad. Among the good: The concert moved quicker than in past years due to a revolving stage. Among the bad: annoyed parents and screaming 12-year-olds everywhere. Overall, with so many different acts performing, the show was insane.
The best performance by far was 5 Seconds of Summer, who performed “She Looks So Perfect”, “Hey Everybody!”, “Amnesia”, and “She’s Kinda Hot”. Charlie Puth came in a close second with his songs “One Call Away” and “See You Again”. Puth’s performance felt special, especially since “See You Again” was written for his best friend Paul Walker.
Selena Gomez also stole the stage with “Same Old Love”, songs off of her new album, Revival, and a throwback song, Love You Like a Love Song.
Shawn Mendes was the audience favorite, though. Cheering was loudest when he came out on stage. Young to old, everyone was excited to see him.
Some performers weren’t as pleasing to watch (or listen to) — Alessia Cara (“Here”), Natalie LaRose (“Somebody”), and Conrad Sewell (“Hold Me Up”). Some might call these artists one-hit wonders. Props for going out there, but most people only know one of their songs. However, they all have good voices to some extent. And extra credit goes to Sewell for being the only person to actually sing a Christmas song — “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” — at the “holiday” concert. Tove Lo was very awkward on stage. Also the music she decided to perform was quite boring.
Other performers were good but are underappreciated in general. Hailee Steinfeld performed two songs and they were both excellent. Most people don’t know that she was the “new girl” in Pitch Perfect 2. R. City was the other underappreciated act. They produced and wrote many many songs for other artists like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna. They also write their own music and each song has it’s own story behind it.
Overall, Jingle Ball 2015 was filled with the good and the bad, but in the end almost everyone had fun.
