This stormy weather has caused two flexible instruction days and two two-hour delay schedules at BASH. The first FID day was on Monday, January 6th, and the second was on Thursday, February 6th. As for two-hour delays, we have had two of these days during the week of February 9th through 15th.
The snow that we experienced in the past month is almost nothing compared to The Blizzard of 1996. It began on January 6th, 1996 and continued until January 8th. Boyertown was hit with a whopping thirty four inches of snow. Although, because of the ferocious winds, some areas piled up to one hundred inches of snow. The weight of this snow caused roofs to cave in on several commercial and residential buildings. At around 9:00 pm on January 8th, 1996, a heating unit from Boscov’s caved in through the roof onto the toy section of the store. Thankfully, this did not cause any injuries. The only other snowstorm that has come close to the Blizzard of 1996 was in 2016. Snow began on January 22nd, 2016, and ended on January 23rd. Boyertown accumulated a total of twenty-two to thirty inches of snow.
While the beginning of this year has predominantly been cold and snowy, the weather is beginning to take a turn. This week in Boyertown, the temperature will range from 20 degrees Fahrenheit to 54 Fahrenheit. As the month goes on, temperatures are expected to continue to rise higher.
The first day of Spring is approaching in about a month, as it will be on Thursday, March 20th. Between now and then, not much more snow is expected to fall in Boyertown. While Boyertown didn’t get quite enough snow for fun snowy activities such as building snowmen, sledding, or having snowball fights this year, we can be grateful that we did not have to experience the terrible blizzard that Boyertown citizens did in 1996. Now, we can look forward to the warmer weather that is soon to come with springtime.
