Donald Trump was the winner of the 2024 election. After his inaugural speech Donald Trump started signing many orders addressing different campaign promises he made. Many of his campaign strategies focused on what he said would be an “America First” government that aims to stop spending so much money in foreign affairs and focus on solving issues that Americans face. It’s pretty easy to see the many ways in which this type of government affect his many executive orders, but it’ still important to know the specifics of some of the more important orders.
“Granting Pardons And Commutation Of Sentences For Certain Offenses Relating To The Events At Or Near The United States Capitol On January 6, 2021”
Speaking of the election; you’ve likely heard by now but on January 6th 2021, rioters entered the United States Capital in a protest against the results of the 2020 election. This news shocked Americans, as thousands of citizens breached one of the most important locations in the nation. Donald Trump, along with many others, were facing criminal prosecution until Trump signed an executive order which pardoned those involved in the event.
“Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government”
Another executive order trump signed declared “men” and “boys” as males, and “women” and “girls” as females and mandated federal actions use this as a guide for any gender related issues. This order aims to move away from “gender identity” towards a “biological” perspective. The order also repeals rules regarding transgender people that gave them the option to “express the binary nature of sex and the right to single-sex spaces in workplaces and federally funded entities covered by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
“Protecting The Meaning And Value of American Citizenship”
A very important order to look at the key takeaway from this order is that people who are born in the U.S. despite their parents not being citizens will now no longer have their citizenship. Many experts have said that this order likely violates the fourteenth amendments which reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” No action has been taken yet, and a review of the order will likely be conducted before it is placed in effect.
“Putting America First In International Environmental Agreements”
Along with declaring a national emergency in regards to an energy crisis, Trump has used this order to officially pull the U.S. out of multiple international climate agreements including the Paris Agreement, an agreement that requires its 196 participants to reduce carbon emissions. This order should be of no surprise to those who have followed Trump’s political career thus far, as Trump has repeatedly called Climate change a “hoax” and denounced any agreements aiming to mitigate its effects. Trump has since said he longer believes climate change is a hoax, but still believes it does not propose any danger and is a problem created by “alarmists.” It’s important to mention that another executive order, “Unleashing American Energy,” will focus on increasing the use of energy creation with non-renewable fuels like oil and coal.
“Withdrawing The United States From The World Health Organization”
As the name suggests Trump has pulled the U.S. from the World Health Organization. The U.S. spent $1.28 billion in funding the world health Organization, making them the largest WHO contributor in the world. As part of one of his campaign promises Trump has parted ways with the WHO over what he says was a “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic,” and is focusing on his “America First” strategy.
“Declaring A National Emergency At The Southern Border Of The United States”
Donald Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border. In another order President Trump says “America’s sovereignty is under attack. Our southern border is overrun by cartels, criminal gangs, known terrorists, human traffickers, smugglers, unvetted military-age males from foreign adversaries, and illicit narcotics that harm Americans, including America.” He plans to have the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Homeland Security submit a report to him about the conditions and recommendations they have to make improvements.
Trump also wants to “Establish a physical wall,” preventing illegal entry, detain illegal immigrants who break the law until deportation, deport illegal immigrants, and take stronger control of the border. Trump has authorized military intervention at the border.
“Return to In-Person Work” and a hiring freeze
Trump signed an executive order that required all government employees to work in person. This basically put an end to remote work within the government. The memo says that “Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary.”
Trump also issued a memorandum putting a freeze on any hiring in the executive branch of government, with the exception of “military personnel of the armed forces or to positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety.”
“Application Of Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Application Act To TikToK”
Trump put an extension on the TikTok ban that took effect on Sunday. The app was banned for roughly 12-14 hours, before it became usable to users again. As of today, however, it is still not available to download on the app store. Trump’s ban gave another 75 days for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell at least half of their company to U.S. based owners. Trump said that “The U.S. should be entitled to get half of TikTok” while he was signing the extension.
Tariffs
While not official yet, Trump has repeatedly threatened many tariffs on foreign countries, mostly those apart of BRICS, aiming to keep American jobs while also trying to put pressure onto countries the U.S. is more reliant on.
These are just some of the most gripping things Trump signed into law in his first few days in office. It’ll be interesting to see what he, along with his administration, continue to do throughout his term. Regardless of any political affiliation it’s undeniable that sweeping changes are being made.
