With the rise of technology around the world, typing has become a necessary skill for all students to complete their work efficiently. According to the U.S. census 95% of households own a computer. In this school everyone should have at least their school computer. So when you open up your laptop to do homework, note how often you’re taking glances down at your keyboard. There’s a good chance you never really noticed it until someone pointed it out, but most people take frequent glances or don’t even look up at their screen. One possible solution, which may benefit you in more ways than you would think, is to take a typing class.
Before you decide to take a typing class, it’s important to figure out why typing faster is better. Obviously, typing faster saves you time and makes you more productive. Typing twice as fast means about half the time spent working. Additionally being able to type faster is great for communication and note taking. Typing without being hunched over you keyboard also helps your posture, so stay away if you’re aiming for the ideal shrimp body type (pictured left). Faster typing can even increase your comprehension, as you have to put less conscious thought into trying to type and can spend more time listening to new information.
A typing class will focus on teaching people the best ways to type quickly. You learn things like the proper hand placement when typing, how to type without looking at your keyboard, and how to aim for accuracy, not just speed, to avoid typos. Typing classes will also allow you to practice using these skills, and practice tends to make perfect.
So where do you go to take a typing class? Well you’re best option is likely an online course though which you decide to choose is dependent on a few things. Typing.com and TypingClub are both great free resources that allow you to take a lot of time practicing with typing (I would recommend the former, but will not discourage you from using the latter). For those looking for a more in depth type of learning; plenty of colleges offer online courses like Bucks Community College, which has both a three month self-guided course and a six week instructed course depending on your preference.
If, how, or why you choose to take a typing is always going to be up to you, but everyone has to type at some point so it’s always nice to learn early.
