Live Day originally began as a parody of “Saturday Night Live” and was created by former Telecommunication teacher Leslie Leinbach around the mid 90’s (most likely 1995). The original showing followed a more official aesthetic, with performances from both the Choir and parts of Band. Unclaimed student art projects were also auctioned off as part of the event, and the BASH TV crew performed skits they’d created.
Mr. Cherkasky, the current Telecom, teacher learned about Live Day in 2001 when his students at the time asked if they were going to be doing Live Day that year. “I remember my students asked ‘are we doing Live Day this year’ and I asked, ‘what’s that?’ so I looked back at the taping of it, and we decided to do it that year.” Since then Live Day has been apart of BASH tradition.
Live Day historically has featured a multitude of student ran performances. Many of the students from the Telecom class have designed game shows, some game shows that students can expect this year are a version of Family Feud hosted by Kristopher Halsey, a “Guess The Song” game hosted by Thomas Gibbins, and a “Guess the Movie” game hosted by Derek Gilbert. Students are welcome to sign up to perform as well, multiple people will be performing solos (singing or instrument), or performing songs as a band.
For those looking to perform for Live Day, visit Mr. Cherkasky in room 803 during homeroom to sign up before December 16th. Students performing any music will need to let Mr. Cherkasky know if they are playing with a band, solo, or with instruments, the instrument they’re going play (if applicable), the people they’re going to perform with, and what song they’re going to perform.
Students who are planning to perform on Live Day should be aware that Live Day will not premiere on YouTube as it has in the past.
For any students who are interested in doing something other than performing, there will be a volleyball tournament held on Live Day. Students are will have to sign up in room 204 before December 11th. You will need to register a 6 person team for the event with a team name.
“I like being able to see students who aren’t necessarily part of the Telecom team,” says Mr. Cherkasky. “I hope Live Day continues as long as students continue to enjoy it, [or] at least until I retire.”
We are very excited for Live Day this year, and we hope that everyone who is performing does their best. We can’t wait to see another memorable Live Day!
