Devonta Smith and the Eagles handle the Broncos at Mile High
The Broncos looked to sweep the NFC East, and only the Eagles stood in their way, and after blowing out Dallas the week prior, it looked very doable.
Those hopes ended as the Broncos turned into last weeks’ Dallas, and Philly throttled Teddy B and a very hot and cold Denver team in Week 10 at Mile High.
Quarter 1: On the second play of the game, Sirianni continues to use the run game more and more, and Boston Scott picks up a first down, and gets across the fifty. Hurts, with the pocket collapsing, dumps it off to Scott who gets inside the thirty-five. The offense cannot find the endzone and Elliott kicks a thirty yarder. 3-0 PHI. Denver gets nowhere on their opening drive. Hurts connects with Goedert for a big gain. Unfortunately Goedert took a hit, and goes out of the game. Hurts then rolls out right, and bombs one into the endzone. Devonta Smith, one-on-one with fellow Alabama rookie cornerback Patrick Surtain II, makes the fifty-fifty grab for the touchdown. 10-0 PHI.
Quarter 2: Denver puts together a drive as Melvin Gordon III gets them inside the ten. On two more carries, Gordon pops into the endzone for six. 10-7 PHI. Hurts gets hit as he goes to throw the ball and fumbles, but Philly luckily recovers. Teddy Bridgewater threads the needle and hits tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, who runs all the way down past the ten yard line. Brandon McManus makes a twenty-one yard field goal. 10-10. Taking off and running, Hurts goes from about the Eagles’ thirty-five, to Denver’s’ thirty-five. On third & goal, Hurts finds Smith in the endzone once again for the rookie’s second score of the game. 17-10 PHI. Derek Barnett sacks Teddy B on third down. A last minute drill for the Eagles results in a fifty-two yard field goal right before the half. 20-10 PHI.
Quarter 3: Teddy B hits a wide open Courtland Sutton in the middle of the field, who gets inside the thirty-five. Rookie running back Javonte Williams breaks a tackle and reaches the ten. Denver settles for a field goal attempt, but it gets blocked by K’von Wallace. With the Broncos driving downfield, Javonte turns the corner and enters the endzone, but it is called back due to offensive holding. Denver settles for another field goal, and this time McManus successfully makes a twenty-eight yarder. 20-13 PHI. Whilst under pressure, Hurts chucks the football looking for Quez Watkins, and gets intercepted by Justin Simmons. Bridgewater fires and hits Noah Fant. A fourth & one situation arises at the end of the third, and Gordon runs the ball but fumbles, and Darius Slay Jr picks the ball up, and from about the Eagles’ fifteen, takes it all the way back for the defensive scoop & score. 27-13 PHI.
Quarter 4: Jordan Howard has a strong run into Denver territory. Right after, he runs inside the twenty. Twenty-three yard kick is good. 30-13 PHI. Broncos put together a late game drive, but cannot score the touchdown as Bridgewater overthrows everybody. Boston Scott runs for the first down icing the Eagle win 30-13.
The Eagles now fly to take sole position of second place in the NFC East at 4-6.
Looking at the division crown, Dallas is still running away with it after a bounce back game against Atlanta, blowing them out. The Giants were on a bye week, but Washington pulled off the improbable upset over the Buccaneers, and both teams sit right behind Philly.
Jalen Hurts had a lower end, but still solid day completing sixteen of twenty-three passes for 178 yards, and two TDs to one INT. Sirianni continues to effectively use the run game as Jordan Howard had eighty-three rushing yards. Boston Scott had eighty-one yards on the ground as well. Devonta Smith had a good day with sixty-six receiving yards and a pair of TDs. The defense held Denver in check, and Slay’s big scoop & score was the statement on the day.
Switching to Denver, Teddy B completed twenty-two of thirty-six passes for 226 yards. Javonte Williams led in rushing yards with forty-eight, and Albert O. had the most receiving yards with seventy-seven off of three receptions. The identity of Denver continues to be unknown as they have been an up and down team with Bridgewater under center.
The Saints are the Eagles’ next opponent, Even with the loss of Jameis Winston, they have been getting it done with Trevor Siemian with the help of good coaching and a stout defense. With the Eagles still searching for an identity entering Week 11, this matchup should be interesting.
