Humans of BASH 2018-19
The Humans of BASH is modeled after the Humans of New York photo project. Our aim is to give a glimpse into the everyday lives of BASH students. This year, we’re focusing on how and why students are involved in extracurriculars.
My family and my friends and cheer are most important to me, but I haven’t been able to cheer this year because of a shoulder injury. That finally healed but as soon as I was cleared, I broke my ankle tumbling on a trampoline. Tumbling is the tricks that you do like roundoffs, round off back handsprings, cartwheels, forward rolls, front walkovers, and back walkovers. Any kind of trick that you can think o...
I first got involved with [piano] in the first grade. My mom is a music teacher, so she wanted my older brother and I to start getting involved with music in the second grade, but I wanted to start earlier. My first teacher was Mrs. Creed. In third grade I switched teachers for more of a challenge. I also started playing the clarinet from my mother. I started with my current teacher in seventh grade...
ROTC is a great program to be a part of. It’s great because of the people. The working together and being a part of something bigger. You work together with everyone regardless of who or what you are. The program has definitely improved my confidence. I feel a sense of belonging. It showed me I can be myself and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to try new thing and get involved. I’m in [the...
[Because of play practice] I get home at 9:30, it's like 3-9 every day. I’ve had time for other music stuff (band and show choir) during the school day, but other than that, not much. I have to make time to do homework. I’m kind of exhausted when I get home, but I do it during flex and stuff. I like singing. All my friends do. I’ve always kind of done acting, because when I was younger I did the pl...
I was trying to stop the ball but I heard something snap in my leg and I just fell. My [basketball] coach yelled at me to get up so I tried but there was no point my girl had already scored. They called time for Donna [the athletic trainer] to help me off the court. After that, I went to the doctor three times and all they said was that I had sprained my knee, so I went back and tried again. I wasn’...
I go to dance for one to three hours during the week for three nights, sometimes four. I take naps to recover from being sleep deprived, and then I do my homework. I am struggling with back pain right now, because I finished dancing for two hours in a row and from doing abs. But I like being able to express myself and feel great when I am dancing. One dance that I really liked doing was calle...
My dad introduced me to [fencing]. He took me to see a class that was going on to see if I was interested. I couldn't find a sport that I liked until fencing. I like everything about it. I like the actual fighting part; in fact, that’s probably my favorite part about it. I like getting stabbed with the swords the least, though, because it can hurt depending on how hard you get hit. I would like...
I like to do art related stuff [like] music, [and] I like to take photos. Lately it’s become a big thing, when I’m in the car with my mom or I’m just going around and I see all these pretty things I can take pictures of, it drives me insane because I really just want to stop and take a picture of it. I like filming YouTube videos, even though some people make fun of me for that, but it’s fi...
My Christian identity affects my life with my viewpoints and actions. When you are a Christian, your actions reflect Jesus Christ to others. Being in Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) helps me reflect Jesus in school where many people don’t understand Christianity or the Gospel. I am the president of FCA and a leader of my youth group. These help me impact others for Jesus because it’s a way...
Probably the last time I saw my dad [is when I was five]. I remember he didn't say he was leaving; he said he was gonna be gone for a little bit. Like a couple days. I believed him. I thought it was a business trip, and it wasn't. I thought I was gonna see him [again] -- I think he told me Thursday... I still remember that. Thursday. Didn't see him, though. [But] things are just better now. I have new...
